I received a phone call out of the blue from John Denver in the spring of 1967. I was in Atlanta and he was in New York, having recently replaced Chad Mitchell in The Chad Mitchell Trio. He said they had an opening in The Trio and asked if I would be interested in coming to New York to try out. The audition was at the apartment of Milt Okun, who was the Trio's musical director along with Peter, Paul and Mary and many other big folk acts. I was so very nervous but made it through somehow. It turned out to be the first of many musically challenging but infinitely rewarding times I spent with him over the next year and a half. He was the most talented, wise, intelligent, funny, kind and patient man I ever met in the music business (or any other business for that matter). I am so very saddened to see he has died. Rest in Peace kind, wonderful Milt. I owe you more than I can express.
